Plan, in one equation
Plan makes one equation physical — income minus bills, budgets and goals is what's left. Cowry computes nothing on its own; you push the inputs, and everything else follows.
Most budgeting tools scatter your money across separate screens — a budgets tab here, a goals tracker there, a bills list somewhere else — and leave you to hold the whole thing in your head. Plan does the opposite. It puts everything into one equation you can see and push on:
Income − bills − budgets − goals = what's left
That "what's left" is the same figure Today turns into safe to spend. One engine, one answer.
Cowry computes nothing — you do
This is the important bit. Plan isn't a black box that decides things for you. It's an honest calculator for a decision that's yours. You set the inputs; Plan just keeps the arithmetic true:
- Raise a grocery budget → what's left shrinks
- Confirm a detected bill → it's reserved before anything else
- Add a goal reserve → the future gets funded, and what's left reflects it
- Update expected income → the whole pool re-bases
Nothing is hidden on a side panel. If the inputs don't balance, Plan shows the shortfall instead of smoothing it over.
The four inputs
| Input | What it is | Where it's covered |
|---|---|---|
| Income | What you expect to bring in this period | Income smoothing for variable pay |
| Bills | Money that will leave on a date | How bills work |
| Budgets | Ceilings for everyday, discretionary spending | How budgets work |
| Goals | Money reserved so progress isn't optional | Goals in the plan |
They come out in that order. Bills are the least optional, so they're reserved first. Budgets are the lifestyle band. Goals claim what you've chosen to protect for the future. Whatever survives all three is what's genuinely free.
When the equation doesn't balance
If goals ask for more than remains after bills and budgets, Plan surfaces the shortfall rather than hiding it behind an optimistic chart. The honest moves are always visible:
- trim a budget ceiling
- pause or lower a goal, or extend its deadline
- fold a mis-filed budget into a bill (or vice versa) so it's counted correctly
You make the call; Plan re-runs the numbers the instant you do.
Plan and Today agree, always
Because Plan and Today share one engine, they can't disagree. Change a goal reserve on Plan and the safe-to-spend number on Today moves with it — no separate forecast gadget to keep in sync, no reconciliation step. The plan you set is the number you spend against.
Try it
- Open Plan — set income, then add your bills, a couple of budgets, and one goal.
- Watch what's left update as you push each input.
- Deliberately over-commit a goal and see Plan flag the shortfall.
- Open Today — safe-to-spend should reflect the exact plan you just built.
