Terms & Conditions

Version 1.0 · Last updated February 2026

Please read these terms carefully before using Cowry. By creating an account or using any part of the platform you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by these Terms.

1. About Cowry

Cowry is a personal-finance platform designed to help Australians budget smarter, track spending, set savings goals, and connect their bank data securely through Open Banking. The platform is operated by Cowry Pty Ltd ("Cowry", "we", "us", or "our").

By accessing or using Cowry you enter into a legally binding agreement with us governed by these Terms. We may update these Terms from time to time; continued use after notice of any change constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Australia to create an account. By registering you represent and warrant that you meet these requirements and that all information you provide is accurate, current, and complete.

3. Your Account

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access. We are not liable for losses arising from your failure to protect your credentials.

We use Clerk for authentication. Your password is never visible to Cowry — it is handled entirely by Clerk's secure infrastructure.

4. Data Collection & Use

To provide the platform we collect and process the following categories of data:

  • Identity data — name, email address, and account preferences, used to create and manage your account.
  • Financial data — account balances, transaction histories, and budget figures, used to power the core features of the platform (budgets, insights, savings goals, and financial score).
  • Open Banking data — if you connect your bank, transaction and account data is retrieved via the Australian Consumer Data Right (CDR) framework through our accredited data-access provider. This data is used exclusively to populate your Cowry dashboard and is never sold or shared with third parties for advertising.
  • AI interaction data — prompts and responses sent to our AI features (e.g. Cowry Chat, financial insights) are processed by our AI provider (Groq) solely to generate your responses. We do not use this data to train external models. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
  • Usage & diagnostic data — anonymised event logs, error traces, and performance metrics used to improve platform reliability and user experience.

For more information on how we collect, store, and protect your data please read our Privacy Policy.

5. Open Banking (Consumer Data Right)

Connecting your bank via Open Banking is optional. If you choose to do so, you grant Cowry read-only access to your transaction and account data via the Australian CDR framework. We never receive your bank login credentials — authentication happens entirely through your bank's own consent screen.

You may revoke Open Banking access at any time through your bank or through Settings → Data Integrations in the Cowry platform. Revoking access stops future data retrieval; historical data already imported into your Cowry account is retained until you delete your account.

6. AI Features

Cowry offers AI-powered features including budgeting analysis, financial insights, and a chat interface. These features are provided for informational and educational purposes only and do not constitute financial, tax, investment, or legal advice. You should consult a qualified professional before making financial decisions.

AI responses are generated automatically and may contain errors or inaccuracies. Cowry accepts no liability for decisions made based on AI-generated content.

7. Acceptable Use

You must not use Cowry to:

  • violate any applicable law or regulation;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems or another user's account;
  • upload malicious code, viruses, or disruptive content;
  • reverse-engineer, decompile, or copy any part of the platform;
  • use automated tools to scrape or extract data from the platform without our written consent.

8. Subscription & Billing

Certain features may require a paid subscription. The applicable fees, billing period, and cancellation terms will be presented to you before purchase. Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled before the renewal date. Refunds are issued in accordance with Australian Consumer Law.

9. Intellectual Property

All content, software, trademarks, and design elements within the Cowry platform are owned by or licensed to Cowry Pty Ltd. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the platform for personal, non-commercial purposes during the term of your subscription. No rights are transferred to you beyond this licence.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Cowry and its officers, employees, and agents are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the platform — including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profit, or financial loss arising from decisions made using platform data or AI-generated content.

Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, including guarantees that cannot be excluded.

11. Termination

You may close your account at any time via Settings → Account → Delete Account. Cowry may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms or if continued provision of the platform is no longer commercially viable, with reasonable notice where practicable.

On account deletion, your personal data is scheduled for removal from live systems within 30 days and from backups within 90 days, subject to any legal retention obligations.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. Any dispute must first be referred to mediation in Sydney before either party commences court proceedings.
